Der Riese (German for The Giant) is the fourth map in the Zombies game mode. It is the final Zombies map in Call of Duty: World at War. It is set in a secret Nazi facility known as Waffenfabrik Der Riese, in Lower Silesia near Breslau, Germany (now Wrocław in Poland), and was the debut of the teleporters and the Pack-a-Punch Machine, a machine that for 5000 points allows players to upgrade their weapon. It was released in Map Pack 3.
Nuketown is one of the smallest maps in the Call of Duty series, along with Shipment (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare), Dome (both Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3), Rust (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2) and Hijacked (Call of Duty: Black Ops II). The map is based on a typical 1950's U.S. suburb used to demonstrate the effects of a nuclear weapon on a residential area; mannequins as well as accessible buildings and vehicles appear throughout the map. At the end of every game played on Nuketown, a nuclear bomb goes off during the scoreboard sequence.
Lava cracks and pits surround the area and can damage the player. Stamin-Up, Juggernog, Double Tap Root Beer, Speed Cola, Quick Revive, and Tombstone Soda appear on this map; however, Tombstone will not appear when playing solo. The Pack-a-Punch Machine is located in the lava pit in the middle of the map on Survival and does not move or disappear. However it can be difficult to get to since it requires a player expose themselves to lava for an extended period to use the machine, thus making Juggernog a viable option for survival.
